How To Pick Out The Best Hair/Makeup Artists For Your Wedding Day

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Like if wedding planning couldn’t get more hectic, now you also have to figure out how to pick the perfect hair makeup team for the most important day of your life!

After all, you’ll have these pictures to look back on for the rest of your life & you don’t want to see frizzy hair and smudged eyeliner.

This Guide will help you pick the right team & give you an idea of what questions you should consider and ask.

What kind of bride are you?

First things first, you have to figure out what kind of bride you are. Are you more of a casual, elegant, natural, simple, or a super glam bride? Once, you figure that out you can start researching what looks fits your style. Remember the your dress, venue and theme should play a role in your decision as well.

Picking The Right Stylists

Now that you have figured your look, it's time to find the stylist who can make that look work on you. How do you ask? Start doing your research. You can certainly use google, but also consider going on Instagram, Facebook, The Knot, Wedding Wire, etc to find a stylist. Also, you can even find stylists through hashtags. When researching, look for a stylist who is credible. Look for a stylist who has great reviews, a professional website or blog, and or an Instagram profile. This can help you see what's out there and help you narrow down which stylist can help bring your vision to life. Make sure they also are knowledgeable in all hair types and skin tones. You can make sure of this by their pictures/portfolio.

Finally, I found the team for me now what?

You can start by reaching out to the team and asking for their availability. (We suggest booking hair& makeup anywhere from 6 months to 1 year.) Don't rush into asking what is their pricing is right away, sometimes talking about what you're looking for with the team can help them decide what pricing package works best for you. Tell the the team how big your wedding is and tell them how many people will be needing hair/ makeup services. If you have a budget , let them know first off.

Do I really need a trial?

Skipping a trial might save you money, but why add on extra stress for your big day? We highly suggest having a trial because you get to test out different looks, talk about different options and even wear the look for a day to see how things hold up. You also want to get to know your artists and see what they can provide for you and your wedding party the day of your wedding. Also, with a trial, you can learn the vibe the team has and make sure it works with you. These artists will be with you all day usually if you have them around for touch ups, and the last thing you need is to be stuck with people you don't want around. You want artists who are easy to talk to, don't add stress to your big day and who have your back when wedding jitters kick in.

What do I need for my trial?

We can't stress it enough how important it is to have inspiration photos. When looking for photos, look for people who look similar to you. Now, this doesn't mean that person has to be your twin this means looking for someone who has the same hair color as you or even eye color. Before your trial usually, the stylists will tell you how to prep for it. No need to stress, they will usually bring everything. If you rather use your own products or you're allergic to something specific then let them know and usually they will be able to work with you if they are knowledgeable of your allergy. During the trial make sure you're clear on what you like and what you don't like. Don't be shy to give your opinion if you see things going in a different direction.

We hope you found this guide to be helpful.
